From the Hand of Haridel, Mater to the Primogene

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Pater Draconis I,

Where hides the once proud warrior who bested all others and won my hand? Are you not Alpha Draconis, first of your Dynasty?

Where once stood the Great and Noble Champion of the Host; the greatest in all recollection, now hides behind skirt tails.

My heart swelled, as I stood in the East Towers and beheld the spectacle as you rode triumphant from the Great Campaign. Such bounty of exotics did you fetch. Your armies, to the lowest rank, reaffirmed their fealty to you that day. Your subjects lined the ramparts throwing blossoms from the rare Jujuine tree at your feet.

You’ve become a besotted fool, your potency leeched by your Meta trifle. Do you no longer yearn for days of Glory? Are we not Creatures of Conquest? We are not sated by erudition. That Meta witch has made you soft - not to mention the half-breed.

Your likeness is no longer destined to stand proud in the Great Hall. Your forebears spit on you.

May my sons tread on your grave.

Haridel,
Mater to Eron, Primogene

Excerpt from "Sandsong", Part 1 of the Book of Nemus. Coming Soon.

OMEGA - King, F

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Twilight. The cool breeze skips along the surface of the Strait,

kicking up little whitecaps.

That same coolness lifts my hair and soothes my face.

I used to be a son of the dawn; each Golden morning an awakening, rebirth.

I feared the night and the terrors that she brought.

But now, here – on my perch,

I welcome the coming darkness. I embrace it.

I awoke to the haunting murmurs of the Mourning Doves; I hear them now – fitting.

OMEGA

I found my inspiration for "Omega" in "The Bridge", a documentary by Eric Steel that has been haunting me since I watched it on the Documentary Channel recently. The film depicts the attraction that San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge has for some people.

Before I begin . . . .

Disclaimer: I am not a comic book critic. In fact, I dislike critics in any shape or form. SHOX PICKS, for me, is not a place for reviewing comics or giving "3 out of 4 stars". My intention with this little corner of SHOX is to shed some light on comics, be they print or web, that for whatever reason have caught our attention. Hopefully we’ll direct you to some talented artists and writers and then we’ll let you be the judge of their work.

With that said, onto our first "spotlight" . . . .

Frankie B Washington’s PEACE

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Frankie B Washington's PEACEFor those of you who know Frankie you know that one of the most refreshing things about his work is his uniqueness. When you pick up a Frankie B Washington comic book you know who the artist is without the need to read the credits. I have always found this to be an indication that Frankie is a man who follows his visions without the need to conform to popular opinion or whatever the “in” thing is at the time.

PEACE is a great example of this.

Judging from the 1st issue (actually #0), the story itself is one being told on an epic scale. While the first issue is a bit short on character introduction/development, Frankie is laying the foundation for this universe and promises to answer questions readers may have as this story unfolds.
