Frankie B Washington’s PEACE

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Frankie B Washington's PEACEFor those of you who know Frankie you know that one of the most refreshing things about his work is his uniqueness. When you pick up a Frankie B Washington comic book you know who the artist is without the need to read the credits. I have always found this to be an indication that Frankie is a man who follows his visions without the need to conform to popular opinion or whatever the “in” thing is at the time.

PEACE is a great example of this.

Judging from the 1st issue (actually #0), the story itself is one being told on an epic scale. While the first issue is a bit short on character introduction/development, Frankie is laying the foundation for this universe and promises to answer questions readers may have as this story unfolds.

Dirk Manning's Nigntmare World #49, Paranoid

Do you like horror? If you do then you’ll want to give Dirk Manning’s NIGHTMARE WORLD a visit:

http://www.nightmareworld.com/

These stories tend to be of the shorter variety with Dirk Manning doing the scripting and numerous artists contributing their talents to bring his visions to the web. And if you like your comics in the traditional format - in an actual comic book - Dirk has collected some of his stories in anthologies offered through Comixpress.

William Renfro - CEMETERY DANCE SUPERSTAR

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Well Kiddies, I’m plugging one of our own this time. Thing is, it’s not a SHOX project. You see Mr. Renfro has built quite a rep with Cemetery Dance with their comic book series Grave Tales. Here’s his latest, “The Jungle”:

After seeing his work I think you’ll understand why Mr. Renfro has been asked to be a judge in our upcoming Blood & Mirrors contest.

803 STUDIOS

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

This time I want to pass along some love to a group of creators I am growing an appreciation for. Now I don’t know any of these guys personally but I love what they are doing. Too often in this business you see promises made but unkept.

What makes this studio refreshing is they are delivering the goods and then some.

Confession: I ordered their first anthology not because of the studio or the comic itself but because I wanted to see the quality of work being done by their printer. While I thought the book looked great - printing wise - I also liked the product. Since then I have stopped by their website every now and then just to see what they’re up to.

Now you may be asking yourselves “Why would SHOX promote another studio?”. Well, we’re fans as well and we figure the more exposure studios like 803 get the better it will be for all of us. So please, check these guys out and then come on back. We’ll leave the light on for you.

Caitlin R Kiernan

Friday, June 29th, 2007

It took me over a month to break the rules for SHOX Picks so cut me some slack, people.

Caitlin R Kiernan is not an unknown who needs some publicity and I’m not spotlighting her comic work (which she has plenty of). I’m here to tell you if you have not given Ms. Kiernan a try, do yourself a favor and pick up one of her books. She is an award winning author whose novels include “Silk”, “Threshold”, “Murder of Angels”, “Low Red Moon” and “Daughter of Hounds”. My advice - pick up “Silk” - you can thank me after you run out to buy more of her books.

I think Neil Gaiman sums it up well when he described her as “Caitlin R Kiernan is the poet and bard of the wasted and the lost”

Spike’s “Templar, Arizona”

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

SHOX STUDIOS is proud to be a part of the Webcomics Nation. I know we haven’t posted any new stories there for a while but, trust me, that is about to change.

Anyway, I decided to throw some love to a story that routinely is on top of the most popular charts over at Webcomics Nation. The story is titled “Templar, Arizona” and was created by an interesting lady who goes by the name of “Spike”. She’s been at this story for over two years and you can see her grow as a writer/artist as the story does.

Nina Matsumoto’s SATURNALIA

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Well, I am sure at least one of SHOX’s core members will recognize this one. You see, our in-house colorist has this comic creator listed in her friends section at DA. I was simply checking out some artwork and came across this story which impressed me greatly. Check it out as it’s for a good cause. This quote is directly from the creator’s website:

“I’m space coyote, a coyote from outerspace. I currently reside in Canada, taking on the form of a female human. As an Earth citizen, I’m known as Nina Sachie Matsumoto. Using my ancient space secrets, I create art in order to fund my trip back to my home planet. Please support this space coyote today.”

Now how can you not at least give this story a shot with an intro like that?

Craig Taillefer’s WAHOO MORRIS

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

Do you like Terry Moore’s “Strangers in Paradise”? If you do then I highy recommend you give Wahoo Morris a read.

I don’t know Craig Taillefer personally but I did meet him last year at the SPXPO. He was selling Wahoo Morris and something compelled me to give it a try. Could be I was on a Strangers in Paradise kick at the time and saw the resemblance in the artwork. After reading a few pages it is evident the art isn’t where the resemblance stops.

Now don’t get me wrong, this story is not a second-hand version of SIP. It stands on it’s on quite well. If you give it a read I think you’ll agree.

The PARADOX Comic

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Here’s another little love thrown to some aspiring web comic creators. First thing that came to mind was I really liked the look of the characters. Then after reading some of their entries I felt for them as I see they have experienced some of the same struggles SHOX has. I really hope they can pull their project together as I feel it has the potential to be something good.
